Another sunshiny day in paradise!


Explored Waikiki, walking and bussing around. There are a lot of huge designer malls … we didn’t linger! 


Walked to the Honolulu International Centre from where, in 1972,  an Elvis Presley concert was the first satellite broadcast around the world. There’s a less than life size statue of Elvis too. It’s such a small venue compared to those of today. 


Had a picnic at Alo Monoa beach … so quiet compared to our local beach! 


The romance ( for me) of Hawaii is knowing that it’s in the middle of a massive ocean and whichever way you look there are thousands of miles before land. I ignore the fact it’s a strategic US military base. 🙉lalalala

 Such poor internet so difficult to post. Trying this to see if anything will load  Wednesday   Headed towards the small town of Reefton. Called in to Greymouth on the coast. It seemed a quiet little place despite being the largest town on the west coast.  Picked up some stores and got back on the road. The landscape changed as the mountains became more distant and there was a lot more farm land. Big open skies with white fluffy clouds … perfect. We stopped for a picnic. Eventually arrived at Reefton. It was like driving into an old cowboy town…It’s a thriving country town and makes a lot from the tourists passing  through. This is gold rush country …it was mined in this area from 1905. Set up camp then had a walk round town, stopping for a beer in a local hostelry.

  Tuesday Last night the stars were mesmerising in the blue black sky…they seemed so close. We couldn’t take our eyes off them. It’s totally dark here - no light pollution.  First night camping was a success; the tent was still up and we’d slept until nearly 8 o’clock.  Such a beautiful morning. We’d planned a morning hike, but the plan went by the wayside! We read and watched the river and had time just to be still and soak up the peace of this place.  Went into town for a wander…  it was so quiet. A long high street with all sorts, from charity shops to a department store, library, court house etc. there is a Victorian quarter with buildings made from the local limestone. Here there are museums, gift and craft shops. Everything shuts at around 4pm!  Bought some provisions and tucked them away in the camp fridge.  This evening we went to look for penguins… and  we were lucky enough to see many little blue penguins. Monday Still in San Francisco

Monday Last day in San Francisco. Thought we’d do something memorable. We rented bikes to cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge.  Being an enthusiastic but not terribly proficient cyclist I had to ask for my saddle to be lowered so that I could touch the ground easily. The last time we were on bikes was an epic ride  in Vietnam 2 years ago. Paul was straight back into the flow. Me not so much! The team at the bike hire were really helpful. The ride from Fisherman’s Wharf was quite flat and mostly on cycle paths alongside the ocean which was a great start. Stopped at a cafe called the Warming Hut and had the most decadent hot chocolate to fuel up before the ascent to the bridge. All was going well as I geared down to take the hill, but then, disaster,  I got into the wrong gear and wobbled my way to the top, my knees and thighs protesting all the way.
